Cluster: Immigrant Adolescent and Youth Health

Trans, nonbinary, gender-expansive, and gender-questioning migrant youth may face intersecting health facilitators and barriers related to migration, gender identity, discrimination, bullying, and access to gender-affirming health care. This project focuses on migrant youth within the Canadian Trans Youth Health Survey and the British Columbia Adolescent Health Survey to better understand health and wellbeing among trans, nonbinary, gender-expansive, and gender-questioning migrant youth.

The objective of this project is to examine health and wellbeing among trans, nonbinary, gender-expansive, and gender-questioning migrant youth in Canada, with emphasis on gender-affirming health care, resilience factors, bullying, discrimination, and access to care. The project aims to generate preliminary evidence and inform culturally safer, gender-affirming supports, services, and knowledge translation.

1. What are the gender-affirming health care experiences and needs of trans, nonbinary, gender-expansive, and gender-questioning migrant youth?
2. What patterns of bullying and discrimination are reported by trans, nonbinary, gender-expansive, and gender-questioning migrant youth?
3. How do migration and gender diversity intersect in shaping youth health and wellbeing?
4. What correlates and social determinants help explain health inequities in sexual and mental health among migrant youth populations, especially LGBTQ+ migrant youth, racialized migrant youth, and refugee youth?
5. What service and policy implications emerge for culturally safe and gender-affirming care?
6. How do mental health and access to care differ between trans, nonbinary, gender-expansive, and gender-questioning migrant youth and their Canadian-born peers?

This project analyzes data from: the British Columbia Adolescent Health Survey (BCAHS), the Canadian Trans Youth Health Survey (CTYHS). The CTYHS analysis plan focuses on migrant youth who are trans, nonbinary, gender-expansive, and/or gender-questioning, with two main areas of analysis: gender-affirming health care and bullying/discrimination. Quantitative analyses will examine mental health, access to care, resilience factors, and other outcomes among trans and gender-diverse migrant youth compared to Canadian-born peers. Analyses will also examine correlates and social determinants such as discrimination, violence, social support and school connectedness, family and neighbourhood support, access to health care, deprivation, and food insecurity where data are available.
