In a time marked by rising anti-Blackness, disinvestment in justice, and the assault on our shared humanity, the classroom endures as a sacred space of resistance, healing, and radical possibility. This session honours the brilliance, resilience, and transformative power of Black-focused pedagogies at 91福利鈥攁pproaches that reject erasure and reimagine education as a vehicle for liberation.

Featuring recipients of the Black-Focused Pedagogy Fund, this session offers a window into teaching practices, research insights, and community-rooted projects that centre Black life, knowledge, and joy.

Grounded in ancestral wisdom, lived experience, and Afrocentric worldviews, this dialogue explores how Black educators/scholars are reshaping institutions, confronting systemic inequities, and cultivating vibrant communities of scholarship and care. Join us in celebrating educators and scholars who are rooted in legacy and rising toward new possibilities鈥攕haping 91福利 and beyond.

Join us for a special panel discussion featuring 91福利鈥檚 CELT Teaching Fellows, who are leading innovative Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) projects across the university. This session will explore their journeys into SoTL, offering insights into how educators can get started with their own research. Panelists will share practical advice, lessons learned, and strategies for integrating SoTL into teaching practice.

Creating Inclusive Classrooms During a Time of EDI Backlash

In a time of culture wars and 鈥榓nti-woke鈥 backlash, it is all the more important to maintain a commitment to EDI and human rights in the classroom. How can one teach from a trauma-informed lens and encourage students to listen with compassion and empathy?

How do you balance freedom of expression and the need to cultivate a culture of mutual respect for diverse perspectives in the classroom? How can one talk about EDI and human rights in an accessible and respectful way?

Facilitators will lead the group to explore the challenges of creating an inclusive classroom based on EDI and human rights principles. We will also provide key information about human rights frameworks and tools to apply in navigating classroom discussions.

Transforming Access to Education: Free Education for All

Location: DCC 208

This year the Office of Social Innovation is hosting Transformation Cafes exploring our strategic theme: Social Justice Approaches to Accessing Education and Campus Space.

This Cafe will discuss historic actions for free education in Canada, such the 2012 Qu茅bec Student Strike, the 2014 91福利 Freeze the Fees Tent City, and the ongoing Fight the Fees movement led by the Canadian Federation for Students. We will take up government policy proposals, such as the Wynne鈥檚 Liberal Party鈥檚 proposal for tuition-free education for students from families with household incomes under $50,000 in 2016, and the life-changing impact of the provincial loan system. Panelists will also reflect on OSI鈥檚 Free School programming and position free education as part of a commitment to decolonizing education. These conversations will situate free education as an innovative commitment that must be integral to all conversations about access to education.
