The Hamilton Spectator quotes CUR Founding Director, David Amborski, in their look at Hamilton's condo market collapse. With municipalities calling on the province for 'development-charge holidays' to try to address growing infrastructure backlogs, Amborski points out that fee reductions can help mitigate increases down the line, and that if developers want to sell - and have the room to reduce prices - they'll do so in order to drive sales.

In light of the City of Barrie's recent annexation of land from neighbouring Springwater and Oro-Medonte, CUR Founding Director, David Amborski, points out that an increase in land value is to be expected as the area is developed for housing, industrial and commercial properties. Wahi spotlights CUR's recent report examining Toronto's housing shortfall. Diana Petramala, CUR Senior Economist, spoke with Wahi regarding the report's findings that the city's housing crisis is not really a matter of supply shortage, citing that the average household size has remained stable desite the rise in single people (the fastest growing household type across the region). In a well-supplied housing market, more singles would bring down the average household size. With that not being reflected, and not enough housing being built, more Torontonians - particularly newcomers to the city - may be living in substandard conditions.

On the Record speaks with David Amborski, CUR Founding Director, about the impact of the $10 million in funding cuts to Toronto's Housing Accelerator Fund, after city council failed to allow city-wide sixplex zoning without restrictions. (PDF file) How to Keep Housing On (The Right) Track
Novae Res Urbis GTHA quotes David Amborski, CUR Founding Director, on CMHC's Housing Accelerator Fund Progress Tracker, which allows users to track progress in communities across Canada, based on new residential building permits. Amborski points out that a better metric to track should be short-term land supply (land that has already been serviced and approved for development) as municipalities with a healthy short-term land supply are better equipped to handle development, regardless of external market forces that may impact individual building projects.

At the Buildings Show in Toronto, a panel of housing experts including CUR Founding Director, David Amborski, held a fireside chat looking at Canada's housing affordability crisis. As part of the panel, Amborski pointed out that there are a number of issues involved with improving affordability as supply is affected by cost factors, land, construction materials, labour and the approvals process. Of particular concern though, he cites the cost of development charges being imposed on new housing development intended to pay for the capital costs of growth-related services.

In their latest examination of the GTA condo market crisis, Corporate Knights dives into the financialization of housing and what's most likely to fill the gap. The reason for the surge of condo development in the past had to do with the fact that land zoned for high-density residential earned a greater return for condos than purpose-built rentals, states CUR Founding Director, David Amborski, and warns that with investors no longer seeing condos as a viable asset class, the dollars have gone elsewhere and may not return anytime soon.

The Toronto Star's Opinion piece takes a look at what was - and wasn't - included in Mark Carney's first budget, tabled last week. From a housing policy perspective, noticeably absent was any reference to 'accelerated capital cost allowance,' an incentive which previously spurred the development of tens of thousands of rental housing units across the country in the 1970s. Reference is made to a recent brief from CUR, penned by David Amborski, CUR Founding Director, on how reintroducing this incentive, along with a rental subsidy program for lower-income households, could drive construction of new rental units.

The Toronto Star speaks with David Amborski, CUR Founding Director, regarding findings from two recent CMHC studies positing that REITs don't dramatically increase rents and that rent control may, in some cases, stifle supply. ICI Radio-Canada speaks with Frank Clayton, CUR Senior Research Fellow, regarding a Toronto restaranteur's proposal to transform his snack bar and neighbouring building into affordable housing units for people experiencing homelessness. The Trillium quotes CUR Director, David Amborski, on the Ford government's promised $60-billion facelift to Ontario's health-care infrastructure. Amborski states that requiring municipalities to cover substantial costs for infrastructure they don't actually control appears to violate one of the 'pay for say' principles - that local governments should only have financial responsibility to fund services for which they determine what is provided.
By: Steve Cornwell
June 22, 2025
ICI Radio-Canada interviews Frank Clayton, CUR Senior Research Fellow, regarding the middle-class exodus many Ontario cities are experiencing. Clayton points out that this household movement can be attributed to both rising rents and home prices, along with the scarcity of single-family homes on the market. The Toronto Star speaks with Diana Petramala, CUR Senior Researcher, regarding the trend of retirees pausing their downsizing plans in light of falling home prices and economic insecurity. Petramala points out that there wasn't much downsizing happening even prior to the latest market downturn, and that downsizing will not be a significant source of 'unlocking' housing any time soon - citing that seniors who have paid off their mortgage find it challenging to locate cheaper accommodations, be it a new condo, smaller home or even rental housing.

" (PDF file) Can the Toronto Region Meet these Surprisingly Robust Long-Term Economic Forecasts?"
In his review of economic reports for the Toronto Region published by the Toronto Region Board of Trade, Dr. Clayton concurs with the Board's focus on the Toronto economic region as a whole and believes the Board is providing a very positive contribution to the debate on how to ensure continued strong economic growth in the region and rising productivity of its labour force. However, he has reservations about whether the long-term forecasts are achievable without a strong regional-level government structure. The article was published in the spring 2014 issue of The Land Economist.
