Justine Woods is a garment artist, designer, creative scholar, and educator whose work prioritises the relationships that make up her identity as a Penetanguishene Aabitaawikwe. For this mask, Woods was inspired by her childhood memories of spending time with the land and picking blueberries with her family. Her father taught her about the growing qualities of blueberries, explaining that while they can self-pollinate, the fruit flourishes when cross-pollinated with other bushes. Justine says, 鈥淭hese childhood memories and blueberry teachings have resonated with me throughout the pandemic because of their emphasis on the importance of collective community care and a prioritisation of fostering spaces where radical forms of kinship and love within community can flourish, especially during these unprecedented times.鈥
