Music

String instruments hanging in various colours.

The music section of the Department of Philosophy offers a wide range of courses that include the study of classical European music,  popular music,  the architecture of music, and traditional world music. These courses reach beyond basic music vocabulary to include the analysis of important repertoire as well as the historical, cultural, social and political contexts for music.

News & Accolades

  • Professor 's research on Maritime music was featured in this TorontoMet Today story. (May 2025) For more on the Remembered in Exile album, check out .
  • Professor  was featured on a panel discussion entitled "Musicians During COVID 19: Collaboration, Connection and Cacophony (opens in new window) " (October 2020)
  • Professor released her new book, entitled  (Eternal Cavalier Press).
  • Professor Sean Bellaviti won a  for his project entitled "Salsa North of the 40掳 Parallel: A Social History of Latin American and Caribbean Popular Music in Toronto."
  • Professor was awarded two grants from the the : a composing grant and a concept-to-realization grant.
  • Professor  won three grants in 2018-2019: a  from the Access Copyright Foundation; a  from the Canada Council for the Arts; and a  from the Ontario Arts Council.
