Biography

Miriam J. Anderson is Professor of Global Politics at 91福利. Her research examines women鈥檚 political agency in peace negotiations, non-state actors in war and peace, and feminist approaches to peace and security. Conceptually, her work centers on how power, agency, and exclusion operate beyond formal and visible political arenas. She is the author of Windows of Opportunity: How Women Seize Peace Negotiations for Political Change (Oxford University Press, 2016) and co-editor (with David Malet) of Transnational Actors in War and Peace: Militants, Activists, and Corporations in World Politics (Georgetown University Press, 2017). Her work has appeared in leading journals, including International Studies ReviewJournal of Conflict ResolutionGlobal Studies Quarterly, and International Negotiation. She recently co-edited the special issues Women and Peace Negotiations (with Galia Golan, International Negotiation, 2023) and Feminism in the Face of Failure: Peacebuilding in Violent and Illiberal 鈥淧ost-Conflict鈥 Settings (with Elizabeth Corredor and Julia Zulver, Global Studies Quarterly, 2025).

Dr. Anderson is a member of the international editorial board of the Women, Peace, and Security book series at De Gruyter Press; a network advisor to the Canadian Research Network for Women, Peace, and Security (based at Queen鈥檚 University); a member of the Swedish government鈥檚 Folke Bernadotte Academy international research working group, Gender-Equal Peace Processes; and a board member of the Ranked Ballot Initiative for Toronto (RaBIT). From 2018鈥2020, she served as Undergraduate Program Director for the BA (Hons) program in Politics and Governance at 91福利, and in 2024 as Interim Director of the Arts and Contemporary Studies BA (Hons) program. She has held visiting scholar positions at the Centre for Women, Peace and Security (London School of Economics); the Institute for African Studies at the Elliott School of International Affairs, George Washington University; the Institute of Development Policy and Management at the University of Antwerp; and the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University.

From 1999鈥2002, Anderson worked as a human rights monitor for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Mission to the Republic of Croatia. During this period, she also monitored elections in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia for the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). She participated in the One World Global Education program (1994鈥1995), volunteering with grassroots development associations in El Salvador, Mexico, and Nicaragua.

Dr. Miriam Anderson researches non-state actors in international security, specializing on women鈥檚 participation in peace processes and in post-conflict. She is currently completing a project using social network analysis to determine the impact of gender-inclusive peace negotiations on women鈥檚 political influence in post-conflict politics. She teaches courses on international relations, qualitative research methods, women and international security, and women and politics.
