Geoffrey and Erika Bruce Graduate Fellowships in Canadian Water Policy
The Bruce Graduate Fellowships were established in 2017 by Erika v.C. Bruce, to build on her husband鈥檚 legacy. Geoffrey F. Bruce was a distinguished Canadian, dedicated public servant and diplomat who devoted his career to advancing multilateral cooperation in pursuit of environmental protection and sustainable development practices. Geoffrey was passionate about the stewardship of Canadian water resources.
鈥淗e believed that Canadians and Americans are facing major, predictable and costly crises in the use, management and conservation of their shared water resources,鈥� said Erika Bruce about her late husband. 鈥淲hile there is a general awareness of the consequences of these threats, there doesn鈥檛 appear to be a well-coordinated public response, nor persuasive leadership in the various levels of government to respond effectively.鈥�
The Geoffrey and Erika Bruce Fellowships help cultivate that response and support the next generation of freshwater policy leaders. Funds enable graduate students to focus on their research, and ultimately lead to the formation of recommendations that generate and contribute to public policy regarding freshwater resources in Canada.

$25,000 annually in fellowships to fund up to two (2) graduate projects in Canadian water policy
Fellowships may be held for up to two (2) years
September 30, each year
Examples of eligible areas of research include (but are not limited to):
- water politics; political economy of water
- geopolitics of freshwater
- water sovereignty and diplomacy
- transboundary water governance
- water quality/quantity
- freshwater security and protection
- freshwater data and technology
- sustainable industrial/municipal water use/reuse
- watershed governance
- Indigenous water governance/stewardship
- water and national media/public opinion
- intergovernmental relations and water
- water law/legal analysis
- water equity and justice
- water investment and business
- water export/sale/privatization
- comparative/international lessons
- innovative water policies/management
- water and climate change
- other aspects of freshwater as a political, economic or strategic resource.
Projects of an interdisciplinary and applied nature are welcome, although those with a predominantly science focus will be excluded
