Bubblesheet assessments tool

In 2023, we issued a RFP to select a tool that will facilitate bubblesheet-style assessments and exams over the next five years or more. The contract was awarded to Akindi in 2025. This project was a culmination of over two years of work compiling requirements, consulting with stakeholders, completing evaluations, assessing privacy, security and accessibility.

Google Gemini

We facilitated the rollout of the education version of the Google Gemini app, a prompt-based generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool. You can find Gemini at or via the mobile app for Android and iOS. Google Gemini was made available for all faculty and staff on April 29, 2025.

Zoom AI Companion

We facilitated the rollout of the Zoom AI Companion for all employees and staff. Zoom AI Companion leverages generative AI to help meeting hosts automate various tasks during meetings, such as note taking, meeting summaries, and generating action items. Before enabling Zoom AI Companion features, a Privacy Impact Assessment and AI Assessment were completed in consultation with the Office of the General Counsel and Board Secretariat, as well as the Chief Information Security Officer. Zoom鈥檚 AI Companion was made available to all faculty and staff on April 29, 2025.

We created a lightweight tool to help website creators at 91福利 generate Open Graph images. These images appear when sharing links on social media or messaging platforms like Google Chat or Slack. Our tool enables content creators to quickly generate images without needing Photoshop or Canva. The output is carefully optimized for readability and mobile devices, aiming to discourage the creation of inaccessible text-based images. The tool features all 22 brand colours with their corresponding accessible colour combinations.

Accessibility support roles in D2L Brightspace

On January 17, 2025, two new roles were made available for accessibility support persons for D2L Brightspace. These roles were created to facilitate access to course materials for support purposes, such as ASL interpreters, captioners, or other assistive personnel.

Release of Sa11y 4.0

Sa11y is an open source content accessibility checker, created by Adam Chaboryk, IT Accessibility Specialist, on the DMP team.

•  was released January 2025. Version 4 aims to simplify accessibility checking by clearly distinguishing between content author checks and those intended for developers. Includes new UI changes and enhanced contrast checking tools.
• The  was updated on 91福利鈥檚 WordPress Blogging platform on January 24.
• Sa11y is a core feature in In January 2025, a pull request was submitted to upgrade Sa11y to version 4. On April 15, 2025, Joomla 5.3 was released featuring Sa11y 4.0 as a dependency.
• Sa11y was updated to version 4 in both development and production environments within 91福利's main content management system, Adobe Experience Manager, on March 6.
• Sa11y was added to the on April 7, 2025.
• On April 21, Sa11y鈥檚 WordPress plugin was updated to version 1.2.3, adding presets for the to make setup more turnkey.
• On September 27, introduced a clickable Images panel, a new check for unpronounceable alt text, improved annotation positioning, and major performance enhancements.

Courses website rebranded to 鈥淓ducational Technology鈥�

In August 2024, the Courses website was rebranded as Educational Technology, merging all educational technology tools supported by the DMP.

Poll Everywhere 

Poll Everywhere was piloted in partnership with the Provost鈥檚 office from July 2022 until June 2024. It was made available for all faculty and staff, and was integrated with D2L Brightspace. Poll Everywhere is an online audience engagement platform that lets presenters collect responses from participants in real time during classes, meetings, workshops, and events.

Release of Sa11y 3.0

In May 2023, Sa11y 3.0 was released. Sa11y is an open source content accessibility checker, created by Adam Chaboryk, IT Accessibility Specialist on the DMP team. Version 3 includes:

• Dismissable warnings: this feature gives content editors the ability to temporarily dismiss any warnings on a page while they are working.
• Colour filters: Colour filters let you simulate various colour vision deficiencies (CVD) within a page. Use these colour filters on maps, charts, graphs, and other elements.
• Developer updates: Support for Shadow DOM and Web Components, headless checking, additional props and rulesets, modularization and refactoring. 
• Other: Accessibility and interface enhancements. German language translation.

Supporting the University鈥檚 name change

In 2022, the university was renamed to 91福利. Significant updates to technical systems, website documentation, and tutorials were required to support the change to the new name, including all educational technology tools. We worked closely with teams across CCS, including Digital Publishing, Academic Services, and Application Infrastructure, as well as educational technology vendors. Together, we coordinated and implemented changes to ensure a smooth transition.

Transition of bubble sheet system from Scantron to Akindi

Akindi is an online assessment system used to create and grade written or online multiple-choice exams. After piloting for a number of years, Akindi officially replaced Scantron as 91福利鈥檚 bubble sheet/test response system.

Unlike Scantron, all use of Akindi is directly integrated with our LMS. As a result, the DMP team became the lead to provide ongoing support and administration of 91福利's test response solution.

Julia Hanigsberg Make Your Mark Staff Award for the creation of Sa11y

The Julia Hanigsberg Make Your Mark Staff Award is in recognition of Julia Hanigsberg, former vice-president, administration and finance. This award recognizes up to six individuals and teams who have demonstrated excellence in one of the following areas: Client service, Community engagement, Innovation, and Sustainability. Adam Chaborky, IT Accessibility Specialist, Digital Media Projects was awarded for the creation of Sa11y, the open source accessibility checker.

Digital Media Projects team awarded the President鈥檚 Blue and Gold Award of Excellence

The Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, including the Digital Media Projects team, was awarded the President's Blue and Gold Award of Excellence for guidance and support of 91福利鈥檚 transition to remote teaching and learning. The Centre opened in January 2020, bringing together six teaching support units: Teaching Development, eLearning, Curriculum Quality, Experiential Learning, Academic Integrity, and Digital Media Projects. This award recognizes the speed and tireless dedication with which the Centre team responded to the COVID-19 crisis, supporting 91福利 faculty, instructors, and graduate students in adapting to remote teaching and learning through countless workshops, resources, consultations, policy revisions, and operational ingenuity.

Release of Sa11y 2.0

Released July 4, 2021. Sa11y 2.0 introduces several significant updates:

• Expanded test coverage: Adds 20+ new checks, including alt text quality, link text quality, fake list detection, and fake heading identification.
• Automatic scanning: Runs scans on page load and displays issue counts via a notification badge.
• Customization & readability: Introduces a settings panel for toggling Contrast, Readability, Form Labels, and Advanced Link checks; calculates readability using the Flesch reading ease formula.
• User experience improvements: Supports dark mode, better keyboard navigation, and improved screen reader compatibility, new "Skip to issue" button, and hidden content alerts.

Video Streaming Platform

In 2020, we issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to select a tool to provide 91福利 with a streaming platform and portal to replace Ryecast. The chosen solution was provided by YuJa. Learn more about Stream.

Resources to support continuity of learning and teaching from home

In collaboration with the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), we created the Continuity of Teaching and Continuity of Learning guides to navigate COVID-19 disruptions. Additionally, the DMP contributed to the Keep Teaching Taskforce, which was established to help faculty and instructors adapt their courses and exams for alternative delivery.

Release of Sa11y 1.0

Released in March 2020, was originally developed for 91福利's (91福利) content management system as a basic in-page content accessibility checker. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was open-sourced, to help content authors around the world create more accessible content.

Release of in-page accessibility checker for Adobe AEM

Released in October 2019, our IT Accessibility Specialist, Adam Chaboryk, developed an experimental in-page accessibility checker to address the lack of such tools for Adobe AEM. When enabled, it instantly identifies accessibility and usability issues, including missing alt text, non-descriptive links, poor heading structure, and improper component use. Built in-house with the help of Computer Science students, the tool is free, scalable, and checks content before publication.

Transition of the LMS to Brightspace by D2L 

Following consultation with the university community initiated in 2013, the university鈥檚 official LMS was changed in 2016 from Blackboard to Brightspace by D2L (called 鈥淒esire2Learn鈥� at the time). Visit the to learn more about the decision-making process!
