Executive Summary

The OVPRI works collaboratively to support SRC opportunities and excellence for the 91福利 research community.

During the 2022鈥23 fiscal year, 91福利鈥檚 (91福利) Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (OVPRI) received total research funding of $91 million in support of scholarly, research and creative (SRC) activities. Tri-Agency funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) totalled $28.2 million, representing a combined funding increase of 15.1% over the past fiscal period.

This year saw 91福利 awarded $98.6 million from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) to lead an innovative new research program. 鈥淢igrant Integration in the Mid-21st Century: Bridging Divides鈥 is a seven-year interdisciplinary initiative investigating the challenges and opportunities of migrant integration. This innovative new program  builds upon 91福利鈥檚 strength and leadership in immigration and technology. 91福利 also gained a new Canada Research Chair in Digital Wahkohtowin and Cultural Governance. This appointment will address a gap in the representation of Indigenous people as leaders in fields such as technology, digital media and heritage curation.

The university鈥檚 SRC activity earned generous support from all three levels of government, including 97.2% more in provincial funding over the last fiscal year. 91福利 faculty were recognized for their expertise and excellence in their disciplines, receiving numerous honours and accolades, including the inaugural 91福利 NSERC Scholar in Residence.

Research Infosource鈥檚 rankings of Canada鈥檚 Top 50 Research Universities鈥 five-year spotlight highlighted 91福利鈥檚 research income growth between 2018 and 2022. 91福利 ranked third in not-for-profit research income growth during this period, achieving a 74% increase, and fourth in corporate research income growth, with a 70% increase. 

This report highlights some of the university鈥檚 2022鈥23 fiscal year SRC activities, which were made possible by its strategic alliances and partnerships.
