Ozgur Turetken

Dr. Ozgur Turetken

Associate Dean, Research
Professor, Information Technology Management

In early 2010s, the Ted Rogers School of Management made a strategic commitment to be a premier business school. Research has been front and centre of that vision where we aim to be globally recognized for management research and education that shapes the world of business. It took the rest of the 2010s to build the research capacity to deliver on that promise. The launch of the Associate Dean, Research position in 2019 was part of implementing that vision, and I have been fortunate to witness, first-hand, the substantial increases in the activity and the consequent productivity of our researchers.

The previous academic year marked our fifth consecutive year of 150 or more publications, which has been our standard for the 2020s, before which that figure had never reached 100. A majority of this work appears in high impact outlets recognized by the Australian Business School Deans Council (ABDC), and is supported by high bibliometric measures of research impact. As a result, our researchers made the highest contribution to our university鈥檚 success in the 2024 QS World Universities Rankings where 91福利 was ranked #16 in Canada for citations per paper, and #11 in Canada for h-index citations in business and management studies.

Likewise, the 2024 Shanghai Rankings placed 91福利 #5 for high quality research, #7 for research impact and #15 for world class output in management research among our Canadian peers. Likewise, we are ranked #8 for world class output, #10 for high quality research, #12 for research impact and #15 for international collaboration in business administration. This performance, to a great extent, was thanks to our consistent external research funding of $8 million or more a year. Our researchers have been able to secure this level of funding even as investment in research, broadly speaking, is on a decline.

We are also making strides to mobilize the findings of our research to serve our broader stakeholders with original knowledge that addresses the needs of the industry and society. This is the driver behind the diversity of topics that our researchers study, which cover many themes from migration to crypto currencies and social media to business analytics and artificial intelligence. As we look forward, our challenge is to sustain this high bar we have set for ourselves.

These achievements have been a team effort. I want to thank all the faculty members who have applied their innovative thinking to the creation of new insights, the staff who make it possible for them to stay focused on their work, and the students, whose imagination and energy inspire us all every day.

New research index reveals how beloved Canadian brands are perceived

In a time when global trade tensions have made buying Canadian a priority, new research from the Ted Rogers School has ranked the brands Canadians value most.

The inaugural Great Canadian Brand Index (or GCBI) 鈥 believed to be the first made-in-Canada ranking of homegrown brands 鈥 surveyed 2,135 Canadians over the age of 18 on their feelings about how brands measure up on the qualities Canadians value most: friendly, nice, respectful, honest, tolerant, adventurous and sustainable.

The survey found the two brands Canadians value the most are Chapman鈥檚 Ice Cream and the internationally-acclaimed performance company Cirque du Soleil.

Social Media Lab launches DeepfakesTracker.org

Ted Rogers School鈥檚 Social Media Lab has launched DeepfakesTracker.org, a portal designed to track and raise awareness about the prevalence of synthetic media, aka deepfakes, and manipulated or out-of-context media and narratives in our information ecosystem. This comprehensive resource offers a real-time dashboard that tracks fact-checked deepfakes, and an interactive deepfakes themes explorer that offers insights into the semantic similarities of deepsfakes. The portal equips users鈥攊ncluding policymakers, journalists and the general public鈥攚ith the tools and knowledge to help detect deepfakes and better understand their societal impact.

The path forward to advancing economic equity for Black Canadians

The first annual State of Black Economics Report (SOBER) shows that Canada鈥檚 growing and increasingly diverse Black population is advancing economically, but there is more to be done. Written by the Diversity Institute with partners and the Future Skills Centre (FSC), the report examines drivers of economic inclusion 鈥 education, employment, leadership and entrepreneurship 鈥 in order to set benchmarks in the second International Decade for People of African Descent.

鈥淓vidence shows that Black people in Canada face distinctive challenges,鈥 says Dr. Mohamed Elmi, executive director of the Diversity Institute. Analyzing data on their economic conditions provides valuable insights into how we can achieve progress.
