Runs to Banks: The Role of Sweep Banking Deposits During Market Downturn

A transparent clock face overlays stacks of coins, ranging from short to tall. The image symbolizes market downturn.

The stock market has experienced numerous significant downturns, with one of the most significant and recent declines occurring in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When these disruptive events occur, retail investors reduce risk and sell stocks, with the proceeds channeled to safer investments, including federally insured bank deposits.

Using actual sweep deposit data from TD Ameritrade and its affiliated banks, along with estimated sweep deposit data across the broader banking sector, Finance Assistant Professor Yanfei Sun and her co-investigators are the first to examine the role of brokerage firms in serving as intermediaries in channeling funds from stock investors to banks at times when financial markets are under stress.

A Multi-Objective Integrated Approach to Address Sustainability in a Meat Supply Chain

Infographic showing the supply chain: cow on a farm, abattoir, market, and customers with grocery bags. Text reads "Large-Scale Retailers."

Over the past two decades, firms have made efforts to bring sustainability into running their supply chains. However, it is challenging to make supply chains truly sustainable, as they face several constraints. This is especially true in the food industry, as its operations heavily rely on natural resources, and its outputs directly affect the health of people in general.

This study by Global Management Studies Associate Professor Hossein Zolfagharinia seeks to make meat supply chains more sustainable by considering three primary areas: cost, social responsibility and environmental impacts. To do this, Zolfagharinia and his co-investigator developed a mathematical model that allows food processing companies to make better decisions on choosing suppliers, production planning and product distribution.
